Theme: The "INDEPENDENT LIVING IN CYPRUS" in ROME

The president of European social Forum Mr Chrysis Michaelides, and the vice president Mr Petros Petallides took part in the ENIL (European Network for Independent Living) international conference. The conference took place at the Aranciera di San Sisto, in Rome, Italy on May 4 and 5, 2011.

Representatives from Italy, Sweden, Spain, Portugal, Montenegro, Greece and Cyprus took an active part in the conference. Apart from ENIL Italy, other Italian organizations were represented. They presented the problems and the progress made in their countries and the active role of ENIL for this progress. There was also a high attendance from people with disabilities and their friends from Rome and other parts of Italy.

First spoke Mrs Jamie Rolling, the executive director of ENIL. Her speech was followed by the speeches of representatives of other Italian organizations.

In the afternoon the representatives from the other countries gave their speeches. Our representative, the president of ESFC Cyprus Mr Chrysis Michaelides spoke about independent living and personal assistance in Cyprus. After his speech Mr Michaelides received a series of questions from the audience on the special circumstances for independent living in Cyprus.

The second day was spent in more speeches and on the conclusions and further steps that have to be taken.
