THE “INDEPENDENT LIVING” IN CYPRUS

Generally speaking the idea of “Independent living” as a holistic idea of social inclusion of persons with disabilities is unknown.
The Cyprus Republic has a lot of supporting measures ( financial and others) but they are existing on un independent logic, and are based on circumstantial facts, so in action all those measures gives different results violating most of the times the human rights of the Persons with Disabilities .
For example the blinds have priorities in the vocational rehabilitation, also the paraplegics and the tetraplegics, earn more financial benefits if their disability is caused by spine problems. So the Cyprus Ministry is in confused situation, because they refuse any dialogue with the NGOs. They talk only with the KYSOA a governmental financed umbrella, which is condoled by the organization of the blinds and the paraplegics’ (with spin problems) .
